Karkar Island in Madang will hold the first bilum (string bag) festival on June 3rd to 5th at Mapor village.

Chairman of Karkar Island Bilum Festival Pholas Yongole said that many great festivals started from an idea with several people and grew into an annual spectacular event.

The festival is staged to promote culture, identify the skilled bilum weavers, bring revenue to the local people and boost tourism development in Madang and the country. It will be a regular event staged a week before the Madang festival.

Mr. Yongole said he came up with the idea because many people were lured by the attractive colors neatly patterned on the bilums.

He added that Karkar bilum was rated among the best in the world.

The festival opening will begin with a march by school children  and women with bilums, bilum displays, a special traditional karkar dish of galip nuts, tumbuna singsing and string band.

Mr. Yongole said the information would be put on social and mainstream media.
